Dentofacial orthopaedics uses plates called functional appliances to correct malpositioned jaws.

Many children with upper front teeth sticking out (“bucky teeth”) have underdeveloped lower jaws. Functional appliances can reposition the lower jaw forward to improve the child’s facial profile, help eliminate the aberrant soft tissue habits and correct the bite problem within 12 months. As children are still growing, we have a unique opportunity to coordinate their jaw alignment and position with orthopaedic changes.

Once the growth is complete, only jaw surgery can alter the jaw position. Having your child evaluated early will enable us to schedule orthodontic treatment that will take advantage of their natural growth and development.
